In the next module of our communications website, we take a look at the way scientists and experts in the field of communications have created models to better understand the way people interact and communicate. Like in the video, there aredifferent ways to look at how people share ideas and how to model those acts. For more on Communication Modeling, check out our second module.
Understanding communication as a science means that scientific means are used in order to understand how we communicate with each other. In order to isolate and examine specific research questions and test them in a way that can be repeated, specific methods have developed in order to best approach different communication questions. In order to understand how or why we send specific messages, we need a universal way to study, test, and explain how these things all work.
In the Communication Research page, we look at these characteristics, some of the ways that researchers approach their research, and a few articles about what’s behind the research.
So no matter what we study, even the development of the autotuner in modern music and society, scientific research is how we get there.
As part of a Communications class at Saint Xavier University, Blake and I will be offering information about some of the key features in understanding Communication as a social science. There are several units that we much add, including descriptions of research in the Communications field, the understanding of research methods, and even a few of our own ideas about how we communicate with each other.
Our hope is that you’ll be able to walk away from this project knowing something more about the messages that we send and receive to others, whether it’s in person, over a text, or even through a website like ours!
